Celeb roundup: Gwendoline Christie in trippy short, Charles Dance in Underworld, and more
By Dan Selcke
Many of the Game of Thrones cast members may be in Northern Ireland filming Game of Thrones Season 7 at the moment, but they still have other projects coming out. Let’s take a little break and check in.
First up, fashionista Gwendoline Christie stars in a truly bizarre short film from director Barnaby Roper. It’s called The Dress, and it’s…just watch.
It seems like more an experiment in special effects and fashion than a proper story, which is fine. Christie has long been passionate about fashion, so it makes sense she’d get involved in something like this. The outfits in the film are created by Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen, by the way, if that helps you.
Also in a new movie, long-form edition: Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister). He’ll return to the role of Thomas, a vampire leader, in Underworld: Blood Wars, the fifth (fifth!) movie in the long-running series about the ongoing war between vampires and werewolves. It’s war, people, and only Kate Beckinsale can save us now.
If you’re paying close attention, you’ll see another Game of Thrones vet pop up around 1:09. Tobias Menzies, known to GoT fans as Edmure Tully, plays Marius, a werewolf leader. (Although I think they’re called Lycans in the movies. Full disclosure: I have not seen them.) On top of that, it stars Lara Pulver as Semira, an ambitious vampire and the main antagonist. Fans may recognize her as the voice of LadyElissa Forrester in Telltale’s Game of Thrones videogame series. Underworld has GoT stars coming out of its ears!
Okay, so I said we weren’t going to talk about what the stars are doing in Northern Ireland, but this is too odd. A couple of days ago, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (Gregor Clegane) posted a picture of himself working out with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
Now, he reveals that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) is in on the fun, too.
So all the members of the cast go to the gym together? Good for them.
Sticking with this theme, Aaron Williamson is a personal trainer…to the stars. Or one star. He helped Michiel Huisman get into shape for his role as Daario Naharis. Let’s travel into the past with the magic of Instagram:
No pain, no gain, etc, etc. Finally, Game of Thrones luminary Joanna Robinson wrote an interesting article about Emilia Clarke’s box office viability over at Vanity Fair. Basically, her thesis is that, off all the people in the cast, Clarke has the best chances of becoming a proper movie star, based in part on the strong performance of Me Before You, which didn’t cost a lot but performed well. The end of the show is in sight, so I’m sure all the cast members are thinking about that kind of thing.
