The Popularity and Intricacy of Doctor Who Fan Theories
By Leah Tedesco
Fan theories for Doctor Who have been popular virtually for as long as the show has existed. To keep up with the increasing amount of the franchise’s lore over the decades, such theories have been refined into an intricately creative artform.
More than ever, fan theories have been all the rage amongst fans of Doctor Who. This is especially so for theories of an intricate nature. Of course, they have just as much potential to be full of plot holes than the actual writing for the show (that is to say, lots), but some of them are quite solid. In addition, some of them even seek to explain away the parts of the show that do not exactly make sense. In any case, many of them hold a great interest.

Earlier this month, Huw Fullerton of Radio Times shared an article discussing the theory that Clara Oswald is the second wife about whom River Song was speaking in ‘The Husbands of River Song.’ While, as Fullerton points out, the concept is not completely sound, it is a cool one, none the less. This past Sunday, we posted an article about another theory, which proposes that the Tenth Doctor was foolishly responsible for both of this regenerations. While the angle is questionable, it is hard not to admire how well it was thought out.
This week, there are two more theories that have spurred discussion on the internet. One is regarding the Doctors and companions of the revival representing different stages of grief, in order. It is intriguing, yet has the problem of being vague, as each stage can conceivably be applied to more than one incarnation of the Doctor. It is sort of like astrology. The other theory is a detailed explanation as to why the show is annoyingly linear in that Doctor is only sometimes able to revisit various characters and events from previous points in the show’s history. It is quite brilliant in its analysis of TARDISes, Time Lords, Gallifrey, River Song, the Eye of Harmony, the Time Scoop, and the Time Vortex.
