Big Finish: Doctor Who – Classic Doctors, New Monsters Gets Second Volume

Listening to classic Doctors facing off against new monsters in Big Finish’s Doctor Who adventures is certainly a treat. That trend will be continuing next year with a second series.

There is a great deal of enjoyment in hearing the Doctors of yesteryear facing off against the more modern foes on Doctor Who. It gives a different feel to those previous incarnations, while providing an answer as to how the Doctor knows so much about creatures he had seemingly never seen before.

As such, it made sense for Big Finish to produce their series entitled Classic Doctors, New Monsters. These audio dramas allowed us to hear those “old” encounters that were unable to be shown on television, while bringing previous Doctors back for new adventures. It was, truly, an excellent idea.

In fact, that idea was successful enough where it is back. The second volume of Classic Doctors, New Monsters is in the works, and is slated to be released in 2017. The first monster for that series has been announced, as Big Finish confirmed that the Fifth Doctor will be facing the Racnoss. The story, ‘Empire of the Racnoss,’ was written by Scott Handcock and is being directed by Barnaby Edwards. The voice actors include Peter Davison, Andrew French, Adjoa Andoh, Nigel Planer, and Lisa Kay.

More from Winter is Coming

The Racnoss made their appearance during ‘The Runaway Bride,’ and have since been featured in animated stories and books. A hybrid humanoid/arachnid creature, the Racnoss were known for their silk based technology, and voracious appetites at birth. With their ability to teleport, virtually anywhere could become their next feeding ground.

In this adventure, the Fifth Doctor will not only have to deal with the Racnoss, but also their Empress, who is engaged in a civil war with her crippled husband. Add in the intriguing Baby Spider Workshop, and this latest adventure could be another potential classic.

Of course, it does have a limited audience. Given the negative feelings that a great deal of people have toward spiders, even listening to the Doctor and his companions being chased by these creatures could be fodder for plenty of nightmares. Nonetheless, it sounds like quite the interesting episode.

Big Finish adventures are always great, but they are especially useful in the off season of Doctor Who on television.
