Doctor Who: A TARDIS in Over the Hedge

Humans are not the only ones who are in need of their Doctor Who fix. Verne, the continually abused and ridiculed turtle of the Over the Hedge comic strip, is also craving the Doctor.

It is amazing how many people one can find who are fans of Doctor Who. People from all walks of life, touching on virtually every segment of humanity, tune in each week to watch the latest episode of the Doctor and his companions. As it turns out, this fandom even extends to other species.

Not only are we eagerly awaiting the upcoming season, but that impatience has also extended to Verne, the oft ridiculed, but incredibly intelligent turtle in Over the Hedge. After complaining about how he cannot wait until next year for more Doctor Who (excluding the Christmas special, of course) to his friends R.J. and Hammy, the mischievous squirrel revealed that he had created his own TARDIS out of popsicle sticks.

One would think that the size of Verne’s TARDIS would be appropriately in proportion to the average size of the group of critter friends. There seems to have been a miscalculation, however, as it is extra tiny, a la ‘Logopolis’ and ‘Flatline.’ Hopefully, it is bigger on the inside, allowing for the three friends to fit within. And, of course, Verne is against taking the craft on an adventure, given the possible ramifications that could come with time travel. However, given the way he tends to be overridden by his friends, he may well have his own adventures in time and space.

Maybe it is not the same as watching the Doctor, but witnessing the hijinks that Verne, R.J., and Hammy get up to in their travels may be a decent enough morsel to tide us over for a bit. We get to witness one Doctor Who fan living the dream of taking off in his own TARDIS. At least, that seems to be the direction that the comic is going this week.
