Justin Chatwin to Play “Superhero Character” in 2016 Doctor Who Christmas Special
By David Hill
One may say that the Doctor is a superhero in his own right. However, the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special is set to have a “superhero character” all its own.
The debate of whether or not the Doctor is a superhero is an interesting one. Other than regeneration and mindreading, he does not have “super powers” as the typical comic book hero would possess — it seems that he is sort of like Batman in that respect. He is also like Superman, however, in that he is a figure of hope. Armed with only a screwdriver and his mind, the Doctor travels about, fixing the universe and curing its ills. He does have a super awesome vehicle, though… again, like Batman.
Yet, as impressive as that may be, the Doctor is not going to hurdle buildings with a single bound or stop a runaway locomotive with his strength. Nonetheless, in the Doctor Who world, the Doctor may well be a superhero figure, one who can handle virtually anything thrown his way.

It seems, though, that Doctor Who is potentially about to have an actual superhero in its midst. It was reported that, in the upcoming Christmas special, actor Justin Chatwin will be appearing as a guest star, portraying a “superhero character.”
The vagueness of that description is intriguing on more than one level. Firstly, nothing indicates that Chatwin is actually going to be a superhero. Instead, he could be someone who is delusional and thinks of himself as a superhero, or just a regular Joe who is trying to combat crime on his own. A Doctor Who version of Blankman, if you will. Secondly, if he is a superhero, what makes him one?
