The BBC has released a promo image and a behind the scenes trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special!

At the Doctor Who panel at New York Comic Con, the BBC bestowed upon the world a decent chunk of information and media regarding the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special. First of all, we now know the episode title: ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio.’ In the special, Justin Chatwin plays an as of yet unnamed superhero, as was reported the end of last month. Secondly, we also have an epic promo pic of him standing on top of a building overlooking a cityscape.

Thirdly, there is a behind the scenes trailer, which reveals the location to be New York City, for those of us who are not particularly good at identifying cities from their buildings. Check it out below:

More from Winter is Coming

Some points of interest from the trailer are:

  • The Doctor interacts with a small child in pajamas who appears to be levitating.
  • At one point, Nardole appears to be dressed as one of the three wise men from the nativity story.
  • The situation becomes so extreme that a S.W.A.T. team gets involved.

Anyway, showrunner Steven Moffat revealed that his inspiration for jumping on the superhero bandwagon is his obsession with the genre. His favorite character is Clark Kent, specifically, because he considers the way that Superman’s alter ego handles his relationship with Lois Lane to be the greatest love story of all time. He calls it, “a love triangle with two people in it!” Doctor Mysterio’s alter ego even appears to wear the cliché thick-rimmed glasses.
