Westworld Theory: Are the flies cameras?
The flies of Westworld, and why the hosts can’t kill them, has led some to theorize that perhaps the flies are tiny cameras used by management.
The flies of Westworld certainly serve a symbolic purpose, but do they also serve a practical purpose? We’ve already discussed whether we think the flies are canaries in the coal mine for Westworld, which is intriguing, but could the flies also be tiny spies?
Some Westworld theory buffs are guessing that the flies are the key to how the Westworld management sees everything inside the park. We know that management has cameras all over the park, but we have yet to actually see a camera. Just because we haven’t seen one though doesn’t mean they aren’t just traditional security cameras. Disney has cameras all over their parks too and most people don’t notice them at all.
If the flies are cameras it would explain why the hosts have been programed not to kill them, but there are also two big problems with this theory. First Dolores killed a fly. If the flies were tiny cameras and Dolores killed or destroyed one wouldn’t managment know about it right away? Wouldn’t that be a huge red flag?
Also if the flies are tiny cameras why does the Westworld terms and conditions say they are real flies? The terms and conditions are fine explaining that every other creature in the park is artifical, why not admit that the flies are? Perhaps this is due to security, not wanting the guests to know the flies are cameras, but it seems strange anyway.
We don’t know if they flies of Westworld are tiny cameras or not, but we think this Westworld theory is probably less likely than some of the other ideas the tiny insects have inspired.
