Thandie Newton on Maeve’s big scene in Westworld episode 4

Maeve is questioning her existence, and it lead to an intense scene in last night’s episode of Westworld.

Maeve has gone from being just another host to seeing things no other host sees, not even Dolores. This might be in part due to her playing the role of the madam. Maeve was programed to be able to size up the guests and understand who they were and what they wanted. This heightened insight may be what’s helping her see more about the body shop and what’s going on after the hosts are killed than anyone else.

Dolores did tell Maeve “these violent delights have violent ends”, so if that is a command phrase of some kind put in by Arnold then certainly it’s partially responsible for waking Maeve up to what’s going on around her.

Maeve had several powerful moments last night, including finding all the drawings of the “shades” or workers from the body shop. When she opened up the floorboard and found the stack of drawings it was a shock. To the audience it immediately invoked alien abductions. The loss of time and vague images are classic abduction tropes.

The most powerful moment though was when Maeve and Hector found the bullet in Maeve. At that moment they knew that whatever happened it didn’t matter. Nothing in their world really truly matters. Thandie Newton is doing an incredible job playing Maeve.

Maeve’s story is going to be an interesting one. It shows that the problems aren’t just confined to Dolores, but that other hosts are waking up as well. What happens next with Maeve and Hector? Did they die and get reset? Or did something else entirely happen? We will have to wait until next week to find out.
