Westworld Theory: Is Bernard a host?

One of the more popular Westworld theories going around the internet speculates that Bernard might be a host.

SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE MIGHT CONTAIN WESTWORLD SPOILERS.

Is Bernard a host? I really kind of hope he isn’t, because the “everyone is a robot” thing is going to feel a bit cheap after all interesting twists that have been delivered so eloquently in Westworld so far. Let’s take a look at the theory none the less and see if it holds up.

Bernard is the head of Westworld’s behavior department, he has a son who passed away tragically, he speaks to the mother of this lost son on a video call periodically, and he’s having some sort of relationship with Theresa. Bernard also knows that there’s something different about Dolores, and he’s been having conversations with her about it.

All of these things, besides the conversations with Dolores, could of course just be part of his backstory, but one in particular seems a stretch. If Bernard is a host then his relationship wit Theresa doesn’t really make any sense, unless she too is a host.

If Theresa is a host then why would Ford have gone to so much trouble trying to convince her not to interfere with his plans? Why wouldn’t he just progam her not to interfere? So if we assume Theresa is not a host then either no one outside of Ford knows Bernard is a host, or Theresa is having a relationship with a host, and that seems unlikely.

Vanity Fair however covered an interesting Bernard tidbit that may point to him being a host however, and not just any host, but a host clone of Arnold. Bernard does have a tragic backstory like Arnold according to Ford. He does seem to want the hosts to grow in some way at least, like Arnold. Also we do hear Bernard’s voice in Dolores’ head, which seems like a big tell.

It’s been speculated that there’s something more to Westworld, we know managment wants more than just a theme park. Much of that speculation revolves around the idea of bringing people back from the dead, or at least moving their consciousness into a host. There are hints to this in the Westworld terms and conditions; and Ford does talk about Lazarus and bringing people back.

I’m not sold on Bernard being a host, but if he is and he’s a clone of Arnold then that certainly would be an epic twist.
