Most fans seem to have settled on the fact that the multiple timelines Westworld theory is probably correct. Of course this also means that it’s highly likely that William is the man in black. So we are seeing two stories with many of the same players at two different times in their lives.
The question is why has the show chosen to show us these two stories in this way, besides it being really creative storytelling. Everything in Westworld has a deeper meaning, nothing in this show is placed by accident, so surely there’s also a reason the story is being laid out the way it is.
One possible theory is that the hosts have fragmented memories that don’t always remember things in the right order. This was proven by Dolores’ breakdown in the last episode where she lost track of where and when she was. So if all of this has, or a large part, has been from a hosts point of view then this would be one explanation.
Another explanation might be Ford though. We know that Ford has some bigger plans, and we know that much of what’s happened in the park is due to Ford, so what is he trying to do here? We’ve been told many times that even Bernard and Ford don’t really know how the hosts work. So perhaps there’s a piece that Ford is missing, something he saw a bit of thirty years ago in Dolores and William’s story, something he saw thirty five years ago when the massacre happened, something he wants to recreate in this new storyline.
Ford has said he’s not a sentimentalist and that this is something new, but if he just needed one more thing to move forward with bigger plans…
