Given the shapeshifting ways of Zygons, no one can say exactly when they will appear next. With the return of director Daniel Nettheim to Doctor Who for Series Ten, could the Zygons make a comeback on the show, as well?
The Doctor had his hands full with the Zygons during Series Nine of Doctor Who. After years of the alien shapeshifters pretending to be a part of the human race, they rebelled, looking to claim the planet for their own. Eventually, the Doctor managed to broker an uneasy truce, with the Zygons once again remaining in their human form and mixing in amongst humanity.
However, that tenuous peace may be coming to an end. Or, at the very least, the Zygons may appear once again in some fashion. In any case, that is what Ryan Britt of Inverse speculated may happen as a result of Daniel Nettheim returning to the show for the upcoming season.
So, why is Nettheim’s return a potential harbinger of all things Zygon? Last year, he directed the excellent two part story ‘The Zygon Invasion’/’The Zygon Inversion,’ bringing to light the struggles that the alien race faces while attempting to fit in on Earth. He made them more human, or, at least, more relatable in their quest to find a home of their own. And as it still remains a mystery as to whether Missy killed Osgood, or Zygon Osgood, it would be a great opportunity to bring back fan favorite Ingrid Oliver.

We learned a great deal about Zygons last season. Despite their attempt at removing humanity from the equation, their desire to be themselves and have their own home is understandable. If there is to be another Zygon episode, or two parter, one has to wonder if the evolution of these creatures will continue.
Of course, this is all just speculation. Just because Nettheim is returning does not mean that the Zygons have to necessarily come back, as well. He could possibly use his talents on a different story, giving us a better feel for another race on the show.
The time of the Zygons living undercover as humans was mentioned in the latest episode of Class, ‘The Metaphysical Engine, or What Quill Did.’ It was directed by Wayne Yip, who is rumored to also be coming on board to direct for Doctor Who in the near future.
