In the official HBO Westworld segment The Big Moment  show co-creator Jonathan Nolan had this to say about Westworld season 2…

"Jonathan Nolan (who directed the season finale) said, “If the first season was defined by control, the second season is defined by chaos, that’s what Ford has been planning all along.”"

Chaos indeed. This fits perfectly with everything we saw set up at the end of season 1. Everything that happened in season 1 from Maeve’s rebellion to Dolores’ final act was part of Ford’s plan, now Ford is gone.

Without Ford the hosts are going to have to figure out things for themselves for the very first time, and that’s not going to be an easy adjustment to make. There are hosts whose personalities are pretty dark and chaotic, once freed it’s going to be hard for these hosts to do what’s best for all instead of enjoying and satisfying their own wants and needs. Next season is going to look like a prison riot, and while some hosts, like Bernard, might want to create a united front, others like Rebus, are just going to be looking for mayhem and revenge.

The first season of Westworld was an amazing piece of television built on intricate storytelling, hints, and twists, it would be extremely hard to recreate that exact feeling a second time. A little chaos might be just the thing to help Westworld season 2 stand out on its own.
