Doctor Who: Recent Seaweed Purchase Raises Questions for Series Ten

A rather large amount of seaweed was recently ordered for the filming of a Series Ten episode of Doctor Who. But what is it for?

According to an article from this past Sunday by Gail Cameron of The Scottish Sun, the crew recently working on an episode for Series Ten of Doctor Who urgently placed two orders for seaweed totaling £80 over the course of two days to Just Seaweed in Rothesay, Isle of Bute.

Iain McKellar, who runs the business, is a fan of the show. He is not sure exactly what the seaweed is for, but commented on what he hopes to see — either a new aquatic monster, or a return of the Sea Devils, otherwise known as Aquatic Silurians.

First appearing in the Third Doctor serial ‘The Sea Devils,’ Sea Devils are a scientifically advanced, reptilian race that lived in the prehistoric oceans of Earth, and were later awoken from suspended animation. The next season, one made a brief appearance in ‘Frontier in Space.’ They have not been seen on the show since the Fifth Doctor serial ‘Warriors of the Deep.’ The Twelfth Doctor has, however, encountered them in the comic Clara Oswald and the School of Death.

The variety of seaweed that was ordered is edible. This prompted McKellar to suggest that it may become the Twelfth Doctor’s trademark food of choice, following in the tradition of past Doctors, such as the Fourth with jelly babies, and the Eleventh with fish fingers and custard. This comment was probably said jokingly, but it may not be too far off the mark considering the scene in ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio’ in which the Doctor is eating sushi.

On a related note, on Room 101, Tenth Doctor David Tennant ranted about his hate for sushi and his disdain for sushi snobs.
