Doctor Who: Voice of the Daleks is a Constant in the Revival
By David Hill
One of the primary rules on Doctor Who is that everything will change. One rare exception is the voice of the Daleks, which has remained constant over the past eleven years.
It seems like everything changes on Doctor Who. The Doctor regenerates, companions come and go, and the auxiliary characters are never the same. Even the TARDIS changes at times, with a different interior based on the whim of the Doctor. The exterior has also undergone a few subtle changes, even if it remains that familiar blue police box.
And well, virtually everything does change on the show… that is, aside from one thing in the revival – the voice of the Daleks. Nicholas Briggs has been the voice of the xenophobic beings for quite some time, remaining with Doctor Who since it first came back with Christopher Eccleston through the present day.
It is certainly a testament to how well regarded Briggs must be on the show. With the cast and crew coming and going, and through two different regimes, Briggs has remained the sole constant. As the voice of the Daleks could, in theory, be replicated with enough electronic adjustment, it may not be entirely necessary to have him around for that role.

And yet, over eleven years later, there he is. As Briggs himself said, he has become the Tom Baker of the revival of Doctor Who, the one figure who has lasted despite the changes. He refers to himself as the “old soldier,” the one who had been there through all of the battles, a part of everything since the very beginning.
It does not appear as though Briggs will be leaving any time soon. Even if there is a season without the Daleks, Briggs still lends his talents to voice the Cybermen, Zygons, Ice Warriors, and the Judoon. Chances are, he will be a part of every upcoming season unless he determines it is time to walk away, handing the voice modulator to someone else.
