BBC One Air Date and Time for Doctor Who Spin-off Class
By David Hill
For those wanting to watch the latest Doctor Who spin-off, Class, trying to find the show has been a bit frustrating. However, those frustrations will be coming to an end soon, as the BBC has announced when the show will be on the airwaves.
It has been a bit frustrating for many who want to see the latest Doctor Who spin-off, Class. It has been made available only in select countries, some online, some on television. The limited release basically shut out the majority of the program’s potential audience worldwide. Without that resource, those looking for the show are left waiting, or using other, less reputable, ways of being able to watch.
Fortunately for some, there will be another way to watch Class in the next couple of weeks. It was announced that the spin-off will finally be making its way to the airwaves, being televised on BBC One at 10:45 PM beginning on January 9th. While the United Kingdom already has access to the show on the BBC Three website, this new platform will give it greater exposure within that market.
That is certainly an interesting time for Class to air, though. While one can understand the later time slot due to the adult themes of the show, late at night on a Monday is not exactly conducive to a ratings bonanza. With the concerns over how the show performed online, one would have thought that the BBC would attempt to maximize the potential audience.
While it makes sense not to put Class in the same timeslot as Doctor Who following the Christmas special, putting it on Saturday night might have made more sense. A later time slot on the weekend would lend itself to both getting those views, while still keeping it away from younger children.
With the resources that have been put into Class, as well as the governmental demand that the BBC be as profitable as possible, this timeframe is not exactly conducive that that desire. Instead, it almost feels as though the show is being set up to fail, given a time frame where the majority of teenagers — the target audience — will be getting ready for bed, or asleep.
