Doctor Who: Osgood Reference in ‘Mysterio’ Raises Speculation of Return
By David Hill
Osgood became a fan favorite almost immediately on Doctor Who. Could a reference in the 2016 Christmas special indicate her return to the show?
It did not take long for Osgood to become a fan favorite. From her first appearance in the 50th anniversary special, Osgood had a place in the hearts of Whovians everywhere. In her, we saw ourselves, a fan of the Doctor who somehow managed to find herself involved in his adventures. She was living the dream, getting to meet her hero and be a part of his success.
Ever since that appearance, Osgood has been one of the characters whom we all hope returns. Each season has that question of whether or not she will be back, allowing us to live vicariously through her once more — and that hypothetical has been raised once again for Series Ten.
This time, it is not just idle speculation that is leading to the question of whether or not Osgood will return. In the Christmas special, a reference was made to our favorite current member of UNIT. No, she was not a part of the episode, and no, there has been no word about her coming back. However, it is apparent that she is continuing to be a key part of the Whoniverse, even if it is in the background.

Although she passed up being the Doctor’s companion, that does not mean that she cannot be a part of the show. While she would have made a great companion — being the sort of intelligent person that the Doctor wishes for — Osgood has been great as a recurring character. Getting her to return for one or two episodes a season just whets the appetite.
Unfortunately, there have not been any indications that she will be coming back. Yet, given the numerous threats that could appear on Earth, she could well show up in some aspect. After all, she appears to have increased in a particular sort of importance, something that may be related to her esteem in the eyes of the Doctor.
