Make-A-Wish Foundation Helps Young Doctor Who Fan

The Doctor Who dreams of one youth came true with the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Pandorica restaurant, and others.

It is common for people who work on Doctor Who to be very caring and generous individuals. Some examples of this are Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston, Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi, and John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness.

This attitude carries over into the fandom of the show. Whovians are very passionate, including their strong sense of solidarity within their community. Folks in this fandom are known for coming through — and going all out — when it comes to thoughtful gestures for their comrades.

According to an article by Nina Schutzman of the Poughkeepsie Journal, this generosity was recently illustrated by the outpouring of support from all over north eastern United States for 11-year-old Collin Cash of Port Saint Lucie, Florida. The young Doctor Who fan spent a lot of time watching the show to help him get through his battle with Burkitt’s lymphoma B-cell leukemia. Once he was in remission, he and his family turned to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for a dream related to his love of the science fiction program.

More from Winter is Coming

Collin decided to center his adventure on The Pandorica, a Doctor Who themed restaurant in Beacon, New York. When owner Shirley Hot learned that he was coming, she set out to make his experience as fantastic as possible, calling on her network of fan groups to help out. This resulted in “a tremendous response,” with folks from various states making the trek to celebrate with the Cashes. Participants included Dutchess County officials and “more than a dozen” cosplayers. Other businesses got in on the action, as well. Not only did Collin receive gifts of Doctor Who merchandise donated by various local stores, but there was also a TARDIS cake from the Hello Sweetie Bakeshop in Watertown, Connecticut.

The winter holidays may be a particularly popular time for giving, but we are sure that the same thing would have been done for Collin, regardless of the time of year. For more pictures and a video of the event, go to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Update: The CT Whovian Club posted a lot of pictures of the event on Facebook.
