Lego Batman has to fight off all sorts of villains in upcoming new movie, and Doctor Who fans will recognize the Daleks among the familiar foes.
The Lego Batman movie is just days away from release, but early peaks at the trailer reveal a familiar villain. Lego Batman has to fight off the Daleks among a lot of other pop culture baddies,
Although Batman refers to the Daleks as “British robots,” there’s no mistaking the distinctive, “Exterminate!” It’s a fun nod to a fandom that sometimes overlaps with the DC universe. Take a close look at the trailer. See if you can spot them.
This is not the first time the Daleks have made their cinematic debut. Of course they were in the 50th anniversary, “Day of the Doctor.” And the BBC’s DoctorWho page reminds us the Daleks had a brief cameo in the 2003 movie Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
They are in good villain company in the Lego Batman movie, as well. It nods to all the great villains of our time. The movie features stints from Harry Potter’s Voldemort, the Sauron (or his eye at least) from The Lord of the Rings, some gremlins from the Gremlins films, and a special appearance by King Kong.

The movie promises to bring us the same pluck and wry earnestness the original did. But with the addition of an infamous antihero, it’s got a certain added appeal. That appeal includes invoking all sorts of iconic pop culture references, and the inclusion of the Daleks is kind of a big deal.
Fans of the Doctor Who series have always been devoted and loyal, but the mainstream attention is kind of nice, too.
