David Harewood Thinks The New Doctor Should Be Black

Former Doctor Who actor, David Harewood thinks the thirteenth Doctor should be a woman or black, and we totally agree.

David Harewood is speaking out about his hopes for the new Doctor Who, and he’s saying some pretty smart things. As a possible contender for the thirteenth Doctor, he told BBC News, “”It’s nice to be in the running,” but he has some strong opinions about who should replace Peter Capaldi at the end of the year, if it’s not him.

Harewood has previous Doctor Who experience, appearing in “The End of Time” in the 2009-10 season. He’s also appeared in the Showtime hit Homeland, and is currently playing the Martian Manhunter on The CW’s Supergirl.

David Harewood recently spoke out about what he hopes to see in the Doctor Who casting. He told BBC News, “It needs to do something different, so I think it’s either going to be a black person or a woman. It would just bring a different flavour to it.”

He thinks he would make a pretty good Doctor because he’s got some other worldly experience. He says, “I’m already playing an alien so maybe I could switch and play a Time Lord – who knows what’s going to happen.” He made sure to mention, “It’s nice to be in the running. It’s an iconic role.”

Harewood also chatted about all the female frontrunners, include bookies’ favorite, Tilda Swinton. He remarked, “She’s extraordinary anyway so I think she’d be great,” Harewood said. “It would be a very different Doctor and maybe that’s what it needs.”

Harewood, along with a LOT of Doctor Who fans, feels good about the idea of a female Doctor, although it’s been met with some resistance. He’s excited that some of the main frontrunners are women, including Maxine Peake, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Olivia Colman.

Only time will reveal who the new Doctor will be, but it’s an understatement to say we’re excited for the news.
