As the end of Game of Thrones approaches, Kit Harington talks letting go of Jon Snow

The end of Game of Thrones is on the way, and many of the cast members are starting to look back at the experience. As he recently revealed to MovieFone, Kit Harington is no exception. Over the years, Harington has become very fond of Jon Snow, the character who gave him his start in Hollywood. “I sort of know where he is now,” he said. “Next season will be next season, he might go through a big change, I don’t know.”

"He’s dear to me. I’ve lived with him for so long. I think I’ve come into a place of feeling quite emotional about him, actually, knowing that I’m not going to get to go back to him after next year. I’m really trying to just take stock of having lived this sort of dual life with this character, and being through so much with this character. It’s been a strange journey, but I’ll always be fond of it."

Remember: Kit Harington snagged the role of Jon Snow right out of drama school — it was the first time he’d ever been on television. It’s gonna follow him for a long time, so it’s good he thinks fondly of it.

But there comes a time to think about the future, and Harington says he’s mindful about not choosing film roles that pigeonhole him as a Jon Snow-type. “I’m lucky in that I get options and offers.”

"I always want to try and do something different from “Thrones,” if I can; a character that’s not a sword-wielding hero, because I do that for half the year. So I would look at something away from that, but other than that, it’s always on the scripts and the filmmaker. It’s always on when you read a script — is there something that grabs you?"

At the moment, fans can see Harington on the big screen in Brimstone, where he plays a wounded cowboy who bonds with the 14-year-old girl who gives him shelter. Brimstone is available on On Demand/Digital HD and in select theaters, although the critical response has been poor — some critics seem to be put off by its brutality, which is something Game of Thrones cast members may be used to. Still, it’s another building block that can hopefully serve as a foundation for a long career once Thrones is over.

But there are still two seasons of the show left to air. Harington doesn’t know how things are going to end, and that suits him fine. “It’s just amazing, in some ways, having no book to go on, because the scripts come through and you’re completely in the dark about what they’re going to do. Believe me, I just finished Season Seven, and I am already counting down the days until I get the Season Eight scripts.”

"Everyone’s been wondering how it’s going to end, and what’s going to happen right from the get-go, and theorizing about it. It’s really exciting to me not knowing, genuinely having no idea where it’s going to end, what they’ve got in their heads, and being the first to find out."

Game of Thrones season 7 debuts on July 16.
