Game of Thrones meets March Madness, Round 2: Vote for your favorite character in our Sweet 16

The first round of our Game of Thrones March Madness tournament has ended, and we had some interesting results. Before we get to the second round, let’s look back at our Round of 32. To recap, we asked you to pick your favorite character in each of the matchups, using any criteria you liked. Here’s how it turned out:

Tyrion Lannister vs Robert Baratheon

Jaime Lannister vs Yara Greyjoy

Cersei Lannister vs Ramsay Bolton

Tywin Lannister vs Jorah Mormont

Eddard Stark vs Bronn

Robb Stark vs Theon Greyjoy

Sansa Stark vs Tommen Baratheon

Arya Stark vs Stannis Baratheon

Jon Snow vs Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane

Bran Stark vs Davos Seaworth

Catelyn Stark vs Melisandre

Hodor vs Oberyn Martell

Sandor “The Hound” Clegane vs Joffrey Baratheon

Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish vs Margaery Tyrell

Varys vs Daenerys Targaryen

Brienne of Tarth vs Olenna Tyrell

There were upsets in there. Robb Stark was leading Theon Greyjoy in the early voting, but Theon roared back as time went on and won the round with a 13% margin of victory.

Robb wasn’t the only Stark to lose, though. Ned Stark lost to Bronn by just 56 votes — less than 1%. That sneaky bastard.

In the battle of the redheads, Ned’s wife Catelyn fell to Melisandre, losing out by just 114 votes. Bran and his man-servant Hodor also lost their matchups to Ser Davos and Oberyn Martell respectively, although the votes on those matchups were never close. Will House Stark’s tournament path mirror their path on the show: a slow start where many of them are knocked out of the running, but triumph in the end? Sansa, Arya, and Jon Snow remain to fight another day.

Elsewhere, Daenerys nearly lost her matchup with Varys before surging ahead in the last day of voting. Jon Snow was the biggest winner of the round of 32, smashing Gregor “the Mountain” Clegane with close to 94% of the vote. Likewise, Tyrion Lannister had a strong showing over Robert Baratheon, securing 92% of the. Is there a showdown between these two fan favorites looming?

The Lannister twins also had strong support, as did Sansa and Arya Stark. Many of these winners might seem obvious before the voting began, but the Sweet 16 will feature much stiffer competition. There are no Joffreys in the Sweet 16.

Without further ado, lets get to the new matchups. There are some heart-wrenching battles here, starting with a showdown between the sisters Stark. And that’s not the only sibling throwdown — Tyrion and Jaime Lannister are pitted against one another as well. Cersei and Tywin are also going at it. Just like on the show, the members of House Lannister can’t seem to stop fighting among themselves. Hear us roar. At each other.

Other highlights of the Sweet 16 include a fight for supremacy between Daenerys and Brienne, while Jon Snow takes on Davos Seaworth. Should be an interesting round.

Don’t forget: voting for the second round only lasts two days, so get your votes in early. And remember, this is about your favorite character, not who would win in a fight, or who’s most important to the story, although you’re free to use that as criteria if that helps you. There are no wrong answers here.

Unless you choose the Sand Snakes. Just kidding — they aren’t in the polls.
