Peter Capaldi Says Goodbye To Doctor Who, And No You’re Crying

Peter Capaldi says goodbye to Doctor Who in front of members of the press during a preview of the season 10 premiere. And we’re emotional.

The cast and crew of Doctor Who convened at a preview showing of the upcoming season premiere, and things took a turn for the nostalgic. Peter Capaldi says goodbye to the Doctor and it’s making us feel things.

The BBC reports he was “very sad” as he spoke to journalists, and he mused on his four years as the Doctor.  Speaking to an exclusive, invitation-only audience, he said, “It’s an incredible thing to wake up in the morning and go ‘Oh, I’m still Doctor Who!’ and go and blow up some monsters – and that’s how you spend your day.”

He admits he’s feeling kind of emotional about letting the Doctor go, and I’ll confess, he’s not the only one. To hear him tell it, it’s become a real part of his identity and experience. He said, “When you walk around, people don’t see Peter anymore – it’s Doctor Who they see – and he gets many more smiles than I do. It’ll be sad to say goodbye to him.”

The new trailers are really playing on our sentimentality. All the talk of heroes have our emotions in a wistful place, and the season hasn’t even started. I can’t even imagine how it’s going to be when we get closer to Capaldi’s departure.

He doesn’t have much to say about his replacement, possibly playing coy to avoid all the speculation and rumor. When asked about who he thinks will replace him, he told those in attendance last night, “I’m sure whoever that person is will be wonderful.”

He even weighs (sort of)  in on the hotly debated issue of gender when it comes to choosing the next Doctor. He diplomatically remarks, “Doctor Who is a wonderful part, and they are going to make – if they haven’t already done so – a wonderful choice, whether that’s a man or a woman.”
