Mark Gatiss returning as Tycho Nestoris for Game Of Thrones season 7

Generally speaking, when Game of Thrones cast members are asked about what’s coming in season 7, they’re trained to give non-answers. But occasionally tidbits do leak out. Yesterday, cast member Mark Gatiss revealed a few while speaking to press at the BFI & Radio Times Festival. You’ll recall that Gatiss plays Iron Bank representative Tycho Nestoris — he popped up for the first time in season 4’s “The Laws of Gods and Men” when Stannis asked for a loan, and again in season 5’s “The Dance of Dragons” when Mace Tyrell traveled to Braavos to discuss the Crown’s debt. Mace tried to sway Nestoris with his lovely singing voice…but it didn’t work.

So what did Gattis reveal? That he’s coming back for season 7. “Yes, I did it in Belfast last year. I can’t tell you anything more obviously, mostly because I don’t know anything.”

"I’ve done four episodes now and there’s two more they think. It’s a huge saga and I don’t know and I rather like that. But I’ve had a lovely time. The last scene I’m in with – I probably can’t say because it would be a spoiler, wouldn’t it?"

If only he’d completed that thought…Still, some of that is telling. Gattis says he’s done “four episodes” so far — as detailed above, he’s appeared in two that we’ve seen. That means the other two episodes occur in season 7, with another two potentially happening in season 8. That’s four of the final 13 episodes, so going forward we’ll see more of Nestoris than we have before. What might he be up to?

CAUTION: SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT

According to SPOILERS, Nestoris will visit King’s Landing in season 7 to tell Cersei that the Crown’s debt to the Iron Bank is due. We don’t know how that conversation plays out, but with Cersei in power, the Lannister gold mines dry, and the Tyrells no longer backing her financially, we’re gonna guess it doesn’t go well. As the saying goes, the Iron Bank always gets its due. Might Nestoris decide to fund Cersei’s enemies instead? We’re sure Daenerys or Jon Snow would be interested.

Gattis offered one last hint before signing off, although this could just be wishful thinking on his part.

"I made a pitch to be the last one alive because if anyone survives, it’s the banker, isn’t it? They smiled at me and then plotted my doom."

Game of Thrones season 7 debuts July 16th.
