Easter eggs, references, and callbacks in the new photos from Game of Thrones season 7

Yesterday, HBO unleashed 15 new photos from Game of Thrones season 7. Since then, fans have had to analyze them from every angle, and interesting comparisons and easter eggs have bubbled up. Let’s look at a few of them.

First up: the Hound. His photo showed him covered in snow looking none too pleased. Odds are that he and the Brotherhood Without Banners are making good on their promise to head north.

But take a close look at the cloak he’s wearing. We’ve seen it before.

That cloak used to belong to Lem Lemocloak, one of the rogue members of the Brotherhood who killed the Hound’s new friends in “The Broken Man.” As you might recall, the Hound stole Lem’s boots off his body right after Beric Dondarrion hanged him. I guess he wanted the cloak, as well.

Next, take a look at the nifty dragon clasp Grey Worm is wearing in this picture:

The pendent depicts three dragons eating each other’s trails, bling befitting a warrior in service to the dragon queen. However, notice that, in the picture above, Missandei’s outfit is bare of any pendent or jewelry. But in her profile picture:

Bam! Dragon pendent. Although both of these shots seem to be taken in the same location (probably outside Dragonstone), the implication is that these scenes happen at different times. It’s unclear which comes first, but in the intervening time, Missandei either gives the dragon pendent to Grey Worm or Grey Worm gives it to Missandei. So their relationship has advanced to the “exchanging jewelry” stage.

Redditor EveryFckngChicken made a handy primer:

Sticking with Team Targaryen, take a look at the two different outfits Varys sports in these pics. The first if from the shot above, and the second is from his profile pic.

The second looks warmer — notice the fur around the collar. Perhaps this is from a later scene where he’s in a colder location? A lot of the characters are wearing fur in these shots, particularly the ones in the North.

Sansa, for instance. Some fans couldn’t help but notice how similar the shot of her and Littlefinger looked to a shot from season 1:

I don’t know if that’s intentional, but the comparison is intriguing. Note that Sansa is standing in Ned’s place, and wearing a similar-looking pelt.

One more Team Targaryen thing — which do you prefer: Tyrion’s gold Hand of the King pin from season 2 or his silver Hand of the Queen pin from season 7?

Finally, there’re a couple of things we can mine from the shot of Jaime and Cersei in the Iron Throne room:

Notice the sword Jaime is wearing. Eagle-eye commenter Robb pointed out that it’s Widow’s Wail, a Valyrian steel sword made from the remains of Ice, House Stark’s ceremonial greatsword. Joffrey received it as a wedding gift right before he died.

Here are the two shots side by side, focusing on the pommel of the sword.

Neither Joffrey nor Tommen can use Widow’s Wail now. It looks like it’s gone to their uncle/father.

Lastly, let’s check in with Cersei’s hair. It’s still very short, but it looks like it’s grown just a bit since the season 6 finale — that’s season 6 on the left and season 7 on the right.

Notice the length of the bangs. So time has passed, but probably not much, unless she decided to get it cut in the meantime.

And of course, there’s the question of what Gilly is reading in that shot where she and Sam are studying in the Citadel. But that’s worth it’s own post.
