Nikolaj Coster-Waldau: The theory that Jaime will kill Cersei “absolutely makes sense”
By Dan Selcke
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is getting the word out about his new Netflix movie Small Crimes, where he plays a cop-turned-criminal named Joe Denton. While speaking to Harper’s Bazaar about the film, he also touched on what’s coming in Game of Thrones, because no publication on Earth is going to get face time with a cast member and not ask about the show.
Harper’s drilled in on a popular fan theory: that Jaime Lannister may kill his sister Cersei before the show is over. After all, Jaime had plenty of reasons to be wary of his sister at the end of season 6, since he’d sacrificed his honor to stop the Mad King from blowing up King’s Landing years ago only to find that Cersei had blown up several square blocks of it when he was away. And that look he gave her in the throne room during her coronation: chilly.
So does Coster-Waldau think the theory holds water?
"I heard that theory, and it absolutely makes sense. It would be a perfect little nod. But who knows? You’ll have to watch the show [laughs]. It’s a good theory. I always thought maybe it’s too neat, but who knows."
So obviously he didn’t come out and say that it’s going to happen, but it wasn’t a denial. Mull on that.
Coster-Waldau also weighed in on the most meme-tastic part of season 6: Tormund’s attempts to woo Brienne. What’s Jaime think of this?
"I don’t think he knows about it. He’s not on social media, so he’s not getting the play by play."
Beyond that, Coster-Waldau talks a lot about his character in Small Crimes, who by all accounts sounds like a real piece of human garbage. Still, it’s not like the actor is shy about playing morally compromised characters. “I think we’re all flawed, and I think it’s much more interesting to acknowledge that and examine that. I think it’s more fun, and more real.”
Small Crimes comes out on Netflix on April 28. Check out the trailer.
