Game of Thrones Season 8 will likely be filmed in Andalusia, Spain
By Dan Selcke
Game of Thrones season 7 has yet to air, but shooting on the eighth and final season will begin before long. Los Siete Reinos, drawing from a report by Andalucia Information, has info on where that might happen.
Carlos Rosado is the president of the Andalucía Film Comission — it’s his job to attract filmmakers to the area. While appearing on the program Acento Andaluz, Rosado was asked whether HBO would return to Andalusia, located in the south of Spain, for season 8. While he didn’t confirm anything outright, he sounded pretty hopeful:
"We convinced Game of Thrones to come to our land for seasons 6 and 7, so I don’t think it’s unrealistic to say that, as long as nothing goes awry, season 8 will be filmed here as well."
Game of Thrones has been making heavy use of Spain for a couple years now. In season 5, parts of the country stood in for the Water Gardens of Dorne and Daznak’s Pit in Meereen. HBO expanded its presence in season 6, where the city of Girona stood in for parts of King’s Landing, the Castle of Zafra served as the Tower of Joy, and the Castell de Santa Florentina became Horn Hill. The crew spent a lot of time in Spain during season 7, as well, both in the North — where it filmed scenes at Dragonstone — and near Malpartida de Cáceres, where it filmed a massive action scene featuring Dothraki warriors and a dragon. We glimpsed a bit of that in the season 7 trailer.
Considering the show’s history with the region, it seems very likely that Rosado is right, and that HBO will return to Andalusia to film scenes for season 8. And if that weren’t enough, Los Siete Reinos notes that the Spanish legislature is implementing more financial incentives for filmmakers to shoot in the country, so this is all but a done deal.
