Three Time Ladies who would benefit from a spin-off

A female Time Lord? The question has been swirling around for ages. But wouldn’t it be better to give a Time Lady her own show, rather than just a regeneration?

Whether or not the Doctor should regenerate from man to woman has been on everyone’s mind for years. Many people say it’s time to have a woman running the show, especially with representation in Hollywood changing so much. People are focusing much more on women who are overlooked or cursed by double standards in the industry.

However, I believe that in the end, a female doctor in Doctor Who would actually be a bad idea. Most likely she would still be overshadowed by the generations before her, not to mention the people who are against the idea. While a Time Lady is needed, to have one on Doctor Who may just be the opposite of helpful.

Even though it’s what about half of the Doctor Who fandom, some people still want a Female time lord. But they don’t want to lose their male doctor, for whatever reason. So, let’s do what should have been done a long time ago. Make a spin-off where we get a new Doctor only she’s a Time Lady.

Is it a bit simplistic? Maybe. There would still be people who would, for whatever reason, find it wrong. But at least they could still have what they want.

In fact, there are already people from the New era who I’m sure would gladly take the risk of a brand new Doctor Who show with only female Time Lords. You wouldn’t even need a complicated storyline for these ladies to get started!

Mistress Who?

This would actually be incredibly simple. Just focus on the Master’s years as Missy. As far as we know, she’s been in this regeneration for at least a couple hundred years. She had to have had adventures. This would be an interesting concept though. We would essentially have the bad guy as the lead character, giving the show a more Breaking Bad/Dexter type feel. Eventually, we’d come to support the character that in Doctor Who we knew bet against (well, most of us).

It would actually be an incredible change. I’m already thinking that, like Torchwood, we would have a higher rating than the Doctor Who. It would start with Missy regenerating from John Simm’s character, and with Michelle Gomez, we would have amazingly funny moments when he was getting used to being a woman.

This would also give us more time to see Gomez, who we’ve only seen as a bad character in a couple episodes in a few scenes. She, above anyone, would be able to show the Master in many different lights, even a sympathetic one. It would also give the writers of Doctor Who (or whoever decided to pen it), a new character to flesh out.

For people who aren’t privy to the Classic era, they could go over what information was given in that time, plus time before when they were friends. Basically, they would have almost a blank canvass, which even a new regeneration doesn’t quite get.

We would also start, giving Michelle Gomez would star, with a character we already know, linking the spinoff to the show. It sounds like the perfect solution to me.

The Doctor’s Daughter

One of my pet peeves of Doctor Who, of the whole New Era, is that Jenny never got her time. So don’t be surprised that she’s on this list. Actually, given that she’s played by Peter Davison’s daughter, don’t be surprised at all.

As most people know, Doctor Who originally started out as a kids’ show. It was also supposed to be an educational television show (at least, that’s how it was pitched in America). Let’s bring back the classic idea with someone tied to the Classic Era. There’s no one I think that would do better at teaching girls that they can be a badass and fight crime than a female doctor holding the reigns of a children’s television show.

As with Doctor Who, we don’t have to make it strictly for kids, in fact, I’m sure everyone would watch it. But we’re at a time, especially with the hype of Wonder Woman, that many girls are getting the idea they can be more than princesses. Why shouldn’t Doctor Who be a part of that? Companions are a great example, but it’s always the Doctor who figures out at the end.

With Georgia Moffett holding the reigns of a children’s show, I think it would be great for kids and their parents who remember Classic Who. It would also, of course, give the Doctor’s daughter time she’s never had, and a better ending than flying into the moon.

The Adventures of River Song

Yet another female time lady that deserves more time on screen than she got. Even though her storyline was wrapped up nicely in the Christmas special of 2015, there’s still so much we don’t know.

This show would definitely have a higher rating, because River Song is never far away from an innuendo. But who doesn’t want to see a time lady going across the universe, marrying with ulterior motives?

Personally I’ve wanted to know more about River’s life, and what she did when the Doctor was away. We know she was a criminal and was stealing things at one point, but did she ever learn? Did she ever find inspiration by him? In the midst of what River Song brings, we could also find an inspirational story.

It could even, should BBC America ever want to try a spinoff, take place in America, since that’s where Alex Kingston lives. It could be an American version, since it’s almost understandable that Britain doesn’t want to change to a female Doctor.

While it’s unfortunate that so many people are against a female Time Lord in Doctor Who, perhaps Britain just doesn’t want to fix what is working. So let’s start all over, sort of, and take a Time Lord that’s been introduced, Master or not, and give her a separate show. We’d benefit by being able to learn more about a character already known. We also wouldn’t have to worry about an inevitable regeneration where we go back to a male doctor. Let’s just have female versions.
