Game of Thrones shut out at 43rd annual Saturn Awards

Game of Thrones was shut out of the 43rd Saturn Awards last night in Burbank, California, walking away empty-handed from the annual gala held by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. The ceremony was hosted by Guardians of the Galaxy actor Sean Gunn.

GoT was nominated in three categories: Best Fantasy Television Series (Outlander won), Best Actress in Television (Lena Headey lost to Melissa Benoist of Supergirl) and Best Supporting Actor on Television (Kit Harington lost to Ed Harris on Westworld). GoT has garnered 21 Saturn Award nominations over the years (2012-2017) but only won two, both of them in 2015. The show won for Best Limited Run Television Series and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) won for Best Performance by a Younger Actor on Television. These awards would have been for season 4.

Outlander, The Walking Dead, Rogue One, Westworld and Doctor Strange were among the night’s big winners. As it did last yearh, Star Wars was at the head of the pack — Rogue One: A Star Wars Story pulled down eleven nominations and won three: Best Science Fiction Film, Best Director (Gareth Edwards) and Best Special effects. Also,10 Cloverfield Lane won three statuettes for Best Thriller Film, Best Supporting Actress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Best Supporting Actor (John Goodman).

The next big award show on the docket is the Emmy Awards, held on September 16. Although season 7 will have wrapped by then, it won’t be eligible for consideration. There’s always 2018.
