History

Jorah Mormont was born on Bear Island, the first-born son of a noble house. Like many northerners, he had a stern demeanor, but he also had a romantic streak that would get him into lots of trouble throughout his life. For example, when he grew up, he fell in love with Lynesse Hightower, a southern noblewoman perched several rungs above him on the social ladder. They married and moved back to Bear Island, but the austerity of Jorah’s home didn’t sit well with Lynesse, who was used to having all the finest things in life. Jorah tried to provide them for her — he even sold slaves to pay for her expensive tastes, but it was no use. She left him after Ned Stark banished him to Essos for engaging in the slave trade, leaving Jorah alone in a strange land.

Years later, Jorah met Daenerys Targaryen. At the time, he was under orders to spy on her and report her movements back to Robert Baratheon, which he did, but there was a problem: He fell for her. Hard. Even in middle age, Jorah’s romantic streak was alive and well, and he soon devoted himself to Daenerys body and soul. But eventually, the truth about his spying came out, and Dany banished Jorah from her presence, leaving him alone again.

But a lovesick northerner with nothing left to lose will not be deterred. First, Jorah captured Tyrion Lannister and offered him to Daenerys as a gift. She banished him again. Then he became a gladiator and helped save her from an attack by the Sons of the Harpy. She flew away on a dragon. Then he rode the Dothraki Sea looking for her, and when he found her, she sent him away a yet again, although at least they parted on better terms this time. Jorah, you see, contracted a deadly, highly contagious disease called greyscale during his travels with Tyrion Lannister, and Dany, overcome with sympathy, ordered him to find the cure and return to her. Last we saw him, he was headed off to parts unknown.

Jorah could be anywhere. Essos? Maybe. Westeros. Possibly. He could be sitting next to you right now. But wherever he is, we can be sure that he will do whatever he can to carry out his queen’s orders and cure himself. Jorah lives for the love of Daenerys, and he’ll move heaven and earth to become whole and get back to her.

Realistically, where might he go? He could go to Qarth, to seek out a magical cure to his illness. Maybe he’ll return to Old Valyria, where he contracted the disease in the first place. Perhaps he’s travel to Oldtown, the biggest seat of learning in Westeros. Personally, after everything he’s been through, we hope he catches a break.
