The thirteenth Doctor to be announced this weekend
After months of waiting and speculating, it’s time. BBC announced today that the Thirteenth Doctor will be announced this Sunday the 16th, after the Wimbledon’s Men’s Final. Currently, there’s no specific time scheduled for the announcement.
As part of the announcement, BBC put out a video to get us excited for the news. The video shows certain parts around the UK with the number 13 on it somewhere. The video already shows a difference in direction, as it feels much more like Chibnall’s Broadchurch than Moffat’s videos.

With the announcement along the way, speculation about who will be the Doctor is at an all time high. Kris Marshall is currently the odds on favourite, followed quickly behind by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Bookies stopped taking bets on Marshall a couple months ago and then stopped taking bets at all within the last few weeks.
Currently, we don’t know the time of the announcement, only that it will take place after the Wimbledon Finals. With sports events often going beyond their slotted time, we currently don’t know when the announcement will be made, or how.
So, who are we thinking?
This is difficult. When Peter Capaldi was announced, he was barely talked about before the live announcement. So we could be completely misled if we only look at who’s being talked about.
But, just for fun, let’s look at who has the best odds. If we go by what the bookies are saying, Kris Marshall is in the lead 2/1 to be the next Doctor. This mostly comes from the fact that he left his show Death in Paradise quickly after it was announced that Capaldi was leaving.
As the Doctor says, there’s no such thing as a coincidence, but is that too much of one?
The other name being thrown around is Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Despite the fact that her agency has come out and flatly denied it, and she’s working on the Han Solo movie and her own show, Killing Eve, she’s still high in the running.
The most interesting name that’s started to come about is Jodie Whitaker, who played Beth on Broadchurch. I’ve only just started seeing her name, but she’s already the third favourite.
Honestly, trying to guess who the Doctor will be is akin to trying to find the Doctor himself. There are too many variables.
But I think we’re all looking forward to getting some answers this weekend.
