The thirteenth Doctor has finally been announced. Let’s welcome Jodie Whittaker as the newest Doctor!

After much waiting almost a record breaking number of days, the new Doctor has finally been announced. It wasn’t Kris Marshall, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, or Tom Rosenthal. A surprise shook us all as Jodie Whittaker, best known as Beth from Broadchurch, was announced after the Wimbledon Men’s finals.

According to the Guardian, Chibnall said:

"After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we’re excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor.“I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for the Doctor simply blew us all away.“Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The 13th Doctor is on her way.”"

Whittaker also chimed in, saying:

"“I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”"

We’ve talked endlessly about what a female Doctor would do to the show. As someone who was weary about a female Time Lord, I’m actually excited for this choice. It will be interesting to see how Whittaker takes the role of the Doctor.

Whittaker’s name only came around within the last few days, but she quickly rocketed to the top of bookies’ list of who might be the Doctor. By last night, even Kris Marshall, who had been the favorite for months, had dropped significantly.

The casting of a female Doctor will definitely divide the fandom. Many people have already shown their disdain for the choice of Whittaker. However, given her amazing performance in Broadchurch, it seems we have one of the best people to help bring in a huge change.

What do you think of the choice of Jodie Whittaker? Are you excited? Let us know in the comments!
