"“I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”Background – Personal and WorkAccording to Wikipedia, Whittaker was born in a small town in West Yorkshire which is in Northern England. Looks like we’ll have another Doctor hailing from the North! She’s 35 years old and is married to American Actor Christian Contreras with one child. She’s been in an astounding number of films and TV shows since 2006 and has also appeared on stage in five productions. It seems like she will definitely bring an experience that we saw with David Tennant, who had also been in multiple shows and stage productions before coming onto the iconic role. What do we know Whittaker from?We already know that Whittaker has been in multiple productions, but what were her standout performances? We’ll go through the ones that put her on the map, as well as what viewers might recognize her from. Her television first role was The Afternoon Play, where she played Sam in series four. Series three had an appearance by Peter Capaldi, so it seems like the show will now be known for casting Doctors! This was only a one-time role, but it’s always interesting to see where the actors came from!Venus (2006)Her first major role was in the Jessie/Venus in the film Venus. The film focused around an elderly actor (Peter O’Toole) who finds an interest in Jessie (Whittaker) his friend’s grand-niece. This movie earned Whittaker British Independent Film Award nomination and a Satellite Award nomination.Attack the Block (2011)She’s also known for being in the cult classic Attack the Block. The film centers around a group of teens who have to fend for themselves on Guy Fawkes Night, a British holiday. Whittaker starred as Samantha Adams, a nurse in training and new resident. Despite favorable critic reviews, it is considered more as a cult film rather than mainstream.FUN FACT ALERT! For Star Wars fans, the film also starred John Boyega. It also starred Luke Treadaway, a favorite for the thirteenth Doctor a couple months back.Broadchurch (2013-2017)This is the show everyone will know Whittaker from. Broadchurch is, of course, written by Chris Chibnall, and stars David Tennant. Jodie Whittaker plays Beth, the mother of Danny, a boy who was tragically killed. The television show follows the murder investigation and trial of the murderer. She is also in the third season of the show, currently airing on BBC America.Jodie Whittaker gives a stand out performance as the grieving mother, while also dealing with multiple problems as life continues to occur during the tragedy.Okay, so now what? Now we get to speculate! Maybe not in this article, but you can imagine the speculation that’s going to happen with a new female actor. While, at first I was a little weary about Jodie Whittaker, having only known her from Broadchurch. However, looking at her Wikipedia page and IMDB page, you can definitely see she’s more than qualified to take on this iconic role.Next: Change: A large ongoing theme in Doctor WhoWe’ll get the first glimpse of Whittaker at Christmas, but we won’t really see her as the Doctor until the new season airs. We’ll keep getting further in depth with Whittaker’s previous projects. Keep coming back as we delve further into the newest Doctor!Published on 07/17/2017 at 2:46 PM CSTLast updated on 07/17/2017 at 2:46 PM CST “I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet.
