Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke and others discuss the war room scene from “Stormborn”
By Dan Selcke
“Stormborn,” the second episode of Game of Thrones season 7, has aired. Now begin the breakdowns, analyses, and inside-the-episode looks, starting with a new one direct from HBO.
This particular behind-the-scenes video wasn’t included in the clips following the episode itself. Check out Peter Dinklage (Tyrion), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys), and Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand) discuss the scene that took place in the war room at Dragonstone, where Dany’s allies butted heads over how best to kick Cersei off the Iron Throne. Have a watch:
For me, the most interesting part of this video was when Clarke talked about Dany’s thought process heading into her invasion of Westeros. She’s trying to be “smarter” than before, meaning she’s listening to good counsel and taking steps to ensure that her allies don’t turn against her, which she got a taste of in Meereen. But Dinklage says that in doing this, Dany is “fighting her instincts.” When left to her own devices, Dany tends to steamroll over situations. Sometimes that works to her advantage, as when she burned down the hut in Vaes Dothrak and gained the support of the Dothraki army, and sometimes it’s detrimental to her cause, as when she was going to burn a bunch of ships she desperately needed upon arriving back in Meereen.
That’s why the conversation with Olenna is important. By telling Dany to “be a dragon,” Olenna may be releasing a monster Westeros isn’t prepared for.

Indira Varma speaks about Ellaria Sand’s role in this, too, but considering Ellaria’s currently situation, I’m not sure how important her alliance with Dany will be going forward.
