Game of Laughs: Fans have fun with “Stormborn”
By Dan Selcke
Every week, HBO releases a new episode of Game of Thrones, and every week, fans mine it for comedy. Let’s run through some of the funnies that emerged from last Sunday’s episode, “Stormborn.”
To start, plenty of people recapped the episode in high-spirited fashion, starting with YouTube’s own Ozzy Man.
And as always, Jonathan Van Ness of Funny or Die recaps the show from the safety of his salon in LA.
“Then the will-they-won’t-they with Solange and Baby Barack Obama turns into how-will-they-can-they?” This show is great. You gotta love their nickname for Euron, too: Jared Let-Himself-Go.
Latenight show hosts were getting in on the fun this week, too, with Stephen Colbert providing spoiler-phobic fans with a way to avoid their worst fears.
Also in video, this Disney-style animation from stodoe. It’s not related to “Stormborn,” but it is completely awesome.
So that’s how the Wall comes down. Color me surprised.
As always, fans got very creative with memes. A couple of the best ones:
"[EVERYTHING] Jon Snow returning to Winterfell. (OC) from gameofthrones"
Community and Game of Thrones are finally where they belong: together.
I also loved this recasting of The Avengers from @WightsKing. The choices are hilarious, although shouldn’t Varys be Spider-man?
This one’s pretty self-explanatory:
"Don’t put the punchline in the Title. from freefolk"
I refuse to feel ashamed about my love of bad puns.
In cast news, the actor who plays Hot Pie — Ben Hawkey — has made lemons into lemonade by opening his very own Game of Thrones-themed bakery in London! The name: You Know Nothing, Jon Dough. It’s too freaking good.

The bakery operates via delivery service Deliveroo. “Hot Pie’s Direwolf loaves are a favorite for Game of Thrones fans, and people are always asking me for the secret of my recipe,” Hawkey told Highsnobiety. “I can’t share that, but Deliveroo customers will have the chance to try them themselves. You don’t even need to take a dangerous walk down the King’s Road to visit, it comes to you.”
Okay, now let’s dip into the realm of the arguably funny/weird. Justifiably or not, fans routinely get a little exasperated with George R.R. Martin when he announces that he’s doing something other than writing The Winds of Winter, like working on one of the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoffs, for instance. But how would they feel if they knew he was working on building an entire galaxy?
If they’re like me, they’d be confused. Let me back up for a sec. Martin was named as one of several celebrity “players” who created content for Space Odyssey, a game that aims to send players “on real science-based missions to explore space, colonize planets, create and mod in real time.” The guy behind it: Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Tyson is trying to get the project funded on Kickstarter, where it’s already met its goal. Other celebrity players who have submitted content include Neil Gaiman, Peter Beagle and Bill Nye. That’s a lotta nerd power.
Next, some fans are poking fun at the incredibly simple cure for greyscale HBO posted on it Making Game of Thrones blog. Simply peel back the infected skin…
…and apply an ointment made from pine resin, elder twig bark, beeswax, and olive oil.
I mean, most people aren’t just gonna have pine resin in their medicine cabinet, but it’s not too hard to get. After all we’ve heard about the deadliness of greyscale, we expected the cure to be little harder to come by.
Okay, this next one isn’t funny at all, but we couldn’t find any other place for it. Check out Robert Ball’s badass new Beautiful Death illustration from “Stormborn.”
Finally, WiC’s own Corey Smith hosted an incredibly elaborate season 7 premiere party, complete with Game of Thrones Jeopardy, Game of Thrones-themed food, and more! We’ve got the footage.
Party on.
