Doctor Who: How Twelve showed us the importance of a companion

BBC

Throughout Doctor Who, each Doctor has had a different relationship with each companion. Let’s look at Twelve and Clara.

There’s a running joke throughout the Doctor Who fandom. Each Doctor generally has his ‘catch phrase’ or something that they tend to say during their run. The ninth Doctor said ‘fantastic’, the tenth Doctor said ‘allon-sy’, and the eleventh doctor said ‘Geronimo’. Well, if you haven’t noticed, the Twelfth Doctor doesn’t have much he says repeatedly throughout his time. What has he said the most? Clara.

It’s not a joke, either. Fans have gone through the seasons of Doctor Who with Twelve and figured out what he said the most. It’s always been, Clara.

What does it mean?

Why should we care about this? Because it shows the relationship between the Doctor and Clara. And I’m not talking about a potential relationship, that’s a whole other post. This is a simple showing that we didn’t necessarily see in other Doctors, at least in the new Era of Doctor Who.

For Nine and Ten, he leaned on Rose, but it was definitely a romantic relationship. It was trying to give fans what they often come to for a television show — some kind of romantic undertone. Did he lean on Rose? Absolutely. Was Rose a big part of his life? Guaranteed! But with Twelve and Clara, we didn’t see it for a romance. We saw it because he was so unsure of himself and needed grounding.

Twelve and Clara’s relationship

What we learned from Twelve is how much the companions mean to the Doctor. We’ve seen them as best friends, as romances, but never as a rock. A person that the Doctor needs to help hold him up. It’s a beautiful relationship between two people. Clara was his person, his carer, more than his best friend. She was possibly his soulmate in a completely different way.

We’ve seen the Doctor get angry and upset when a companion left, but never have we seen the Doctor go to such great lengths to try to save her. He risked everything to get his friend back – because he didn’t know how to work without her.

It’s a beautiful relationship between two people. It didn’t need sexual tension, it didn’t need romance. Twelve brought us back to the times of the Classic Era when there wasn’t necessarily a romantic element. Just the fact that the Doctor needed the companions as much as they needed him.
