Are you looking for something to watch during the hiatus between now and Christmas? Need a break from the drama in the Who fandom, but still like a good, old fashioned drama? Or, do you just miss Matt Smith?

If this fits your viewing needs, you may want to get ready for season two of The Crown, coming back to Netflix December 8. You’ll certainly have your full of Doctors in December with Matt as His Royal Highness Prince Phillip, and the two Doctor special on Christmas.

For those of you who didn’t watch the first season of the show still a good four months to watch the show. It is a little slow in the beginning, and if you don’t like History it might not be your cup of tea (no pun intended). However, Claire Foy who plays Queen Elizabeth, and Matt Smith are an amazing duo in the show.

A brief recap

Here’s a brief recap if you’re not well versed in British History (don’t worry, I wasn’t either). While the show, obviously focuses on the Queen, you do get to see Smith be his unbelievable and wonderful self in the character. Somehow, and though some would say this is a bad thing, I see the Doctor, even in his portrayal of Phillip. My favorite parts of the show are his interactions with his kids, especially Charles (as in, Prince Charles).

The show also portrays the relationship between Elizabeth and Philip, which is interesting in and of itself. While Elizabeth often works and is a dutiful Queen and wife, Philip is off learning to fly, and going to lunch clubs with his friends. Personally, while it all is historically accurate, I couldn’t help but smile at Philip wanting to fly.

What was particularly the most fun for watching, as a Who fan, is the Queen’s coronation. Since much of The Idiot’s Lantern takes place around the time of the coronation, it was fun to pretend to yell for “the Doctor to leave”. We can’t cross the timelines!

Was it particularly nerdy? Absolutely. But look at me, I run a Doctor Who site, what do you expect?

There are other things that happen to keep the viewer engaged. Sisterly fights! Marriage troubles! Running the country! Winson Churchill! If you are any type of history buff, or want to see Matt Smith fully naked, this is definitely the show for you.

If I’ve convinced you to watch the show, or you’re already a fan, here’s the teaser for season two. In fact, you’ll see that Matt seems to have a rather large role in season two. Another reason to watch!
