Gilly revealed a hugely important plot point last night and Sam didn’t even notice

Ah, Gilly, our favorite wilding-turned Night’s Watcher-turned Oldtown citizen (sort of). Despite the fact that she hasn’t gotten much screen time, she’s shown outstanding growth. She ran away from her abusive father-husband, learned to read, raised a child and has taken care of Sam.

To be honest, Gilly is kind of a hidden BAMF…you don’t really think about it because you never see her, but she is. And she proved that in “Eastwatch,” though if you blinked, you may have missed her big moment.

It happened when Gilly was helping Sam copy scrolls. Between reading about how many steps, windows, and bowel movements High Septon Maynard recorded, she stumbled on something very important. “Maynard says here he issued an annulment for a Prince Ragger and remarried him to someone else at the same time in a secret ceremony in Dorne,” she says.

Okay, there are multiple things we need to go over.

There is no Prince Ragger. We know that. If Sam had been listening rather than whining about not being invited to sit at the big kids table with the rest of the maesters, he probably would have realized that. Gilly mispronounced the name — she meant Rhaegar, as in Rhaegar Targaryen. As in, there’s someone Rhaegar married that they don’t know about. We know it’s Lyanna Stark, and that Jon Snow is their son.

What does this mean? That Jon, not Daenerys, is next in line for the Iron Throne. This could complicate the war ten fold if someone (Sam) took the time to actually read the passage Gilly read.

Gilly just shook up the whole show, and it was cut off by Sam ranting and dropping out of school! Someone, I beg you, in the next episode, find that book. And when you do, make sure you give Gilly some credit.

Or, we could scratch it all and put Gilly on the Iron Throne. I like that better.
