Doctor Who Superlatives: Most Overrated Episode of S10
BBC
For our next Superlative of Doctor Who’s Season 10, we have “The Most Overrated Episode of S10” this goes to….Extremis!
In this category specifically, I was going for “Most Hyped Doctor Who S10 Episode that didn’t quite make the cut”, however, it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue. So overrated is the word we’re using.
For the first half of season ten, we were plagued with the question: who is in the vault? Is it The John Simm Master? Susan? The thirteenth doctor? The Twelfth Doctor from a different time stream?
We got so agitated waiting, the crazier the conspiracies came. I remember writing a good amount of articles about it that I laugh about now.

Why it deserves this award
It turned out to be Missy, it’s a little bit of a letdown. That’s part one of why the episode might have been over hyped. We all expected a huge reveal of a major character, and Missy just seemed too obvious. But there she was, in the vault, playing the piano.
The second reason the episode seemed a bit overhyped is the fact that it didn’t make much sense. Not just the simulation of the world, though that didn’t help, it was the random bits of Missy’s “execution” brought in. Why has this only been plaguing him now? Shouldn’t it have been a prelude to the entire series? That would have made a few things clearer and not quite out of nowhere.
Finally, the simulation could have been handled better. Though the actual storyline was great, I’m still of a mind that they could have used it for a bigger purpose. For instance, how did they get to the simulation world? Have we been in a simulation world for the first five episodes? Was it the TARDIS? There was no explanation of how the Doctor, Nardole, and Bill got to this crazy not-real world.
Unless it was just the library. But still, a little explanation would have been nice. To me, the episode was great as a knee jerk reaction, but the more I think about it, the more I find plot holes.
