From the moment Jon Snow and his merry band of misfits left Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, we knew not all of them were coming back. The odds of successfully capturing a wight were high, let alone capturing one without casualties. Read on to discover the thoughts of one actor whose character didn’t return. SPOILERS for “Beyond the Wall” follow.

As we saw last night, Thoros of Myr succumbed to injuries sustained at the jaws of an undead polar bear, and died. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, actor Paul Kaye revealed how he learned of his character’s demise. “I got the news last summer sometime, I missed a couple calls from [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss], and that’s the kiss of death.”

Although his return was short-lived, Kaye was just happy just to be back on the show, especially since the story in which Thoros is involved in the books has been cut for the TV version.

"It looked like they weren’t following Lady Stoneheart’s storyline in the show, so I prepared myself not to re-emerge. So it was great to get back and have this adventure. Just staying alive for six seasons is an achievement in itself on this show."

Anyway, after succumbing to his wounds, Thoros dies among his companions while waiting for Daenerys Targaryen on a frozen island north of the Wall. “It’s glorious, really,” Kaye said of his character’s death. “And I like the fact I get [cremated] with my own booze as well —there’s a message there somewhere.

Although Kaye called the time he spend on the show “beyond my wildest dreams,” there is one thing about it he didn’t like. “I used to like polar bears,” he said, “but not anymore!” We’re with you there.
