Peter Capaldi is still technically the Doctor, but he’s already talking about his return!

According to an interview with Digital Spy, Peter Capaldi said he would love to come back for possibly a 60th Anniversary as the Twelfth Doctor. He confirmed to Digital Spy that he would love to come back in a multi-Doctor story, similar to the 50th Anniversary.

He says to Digital Spy,

"“I’m sure if it was right, if I thought the material was right, and it was the right time to do it,” he said. “I love Doctor Who, so it’s great to be in it. But I think there comes a time… when you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go, and leave it behind and let it get on with itself.“Maybe in some years’ time, I could pop up again. I’m quite happy to do that.”"

It’s always good to know that a Doctor is willing to come back. Especially when they were a fan of the show for so long as a child! He does have one, understandable, condition.

It has to be awesome. Well, he actually puts it as special. But I’m sure he’d like it to be awesome too.

"“One doesn’t want to… it should never be a casual thing,” he insisted. “It has to be special. That’s one of the things I love about Doctor Who – when it connects with its past, which it has an increasing amount of.“When it touches its own past, it’s an electric moment. But if we all keep showing every season, it’s not!”"

Most likely he’s talking about the recent double Master story, where John Simm met Missy. Though the episodes didn’t give us full Master time, it will still go down as iconic in Doctor Who history.

And then, of course, there’s Twice Upon a Time, where his own Doctor meets the First Doctor, played by David Bradley. This is a great moment for Classic Fans of the show, who will see clips of the first episode played by new actors.

But right now, it looks like we wouldn’t see Capaldi again until the 60th anniversary of the show in 2023. It’s six years, but it would be worth the wait! Especially if we could get a four-doctor story!

He’s not the first actor that has said they’ve wanted to come back. Michelle Gomez, who played Missy, is also open to returning to Doctor Who in Chibnall’s era, given the right time and the right moment. I guess it’s all about the feel of the time, and giving just enough time for us to want them back!
