The Game of Thrones season 7 finale aired tonight, and while it raised a lot of questions, one in particular is bothering us: what became of Tormund Giantsbane?
Tormund, of course, is the lovable wildling who’s won fans on account of his unyielding loyalty to Jon, his charming flirtation with Brienne, and
that time he killed a bunch of innocent peasants in Olly’s village
. People like him, and it was stressful when, in last week’s “Beyond the Wall,” he nearly got pulled under a frozen lake by a pack of vicious wights. Thankfully, he survived to fight another day.
Well, that day came very quickly. At the end of the season 7 finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf,” Tormund was on top of the Wall when the army of the dead came calling. He had a front row seat to the Night King using Viserion to destroy a huge part of the Wall. And while we saw several men scrambling down the switchback stair on the southern part of the Wall, we also saw a good portion of it blown out. And then, after that, we saw Tormund and Beric Dondarrion still on top of the Wall, so at minimum, they were stranded up there.
And then, mere seconds later, a huge portion of the Wall — the portion Tormund was on — collapsed entirely. So…sorry, Tormund fans, but it looks like our favorite ginger is extremely dead. There’s no way he or Beric survived that.
So let’s all bow our heads in remembrance for Tormund Giantsbane, Tall-talker, Horn-blower, and Breaker of Ice, Tormund Thunderfist, and Husband to Bears.
Next: When does Game of Thrones season 8 premiere?
Also, maybe we’ll see him as a wight? Silver lining?
