“The Dragon and the Wolf” is the most-watched episode of Game of Thrones ever

Game of Thrones is a popular show. A lot of people watch it. That’s more true now than ever before.

This season, the show has had a couple of personal bests. “Dragonstone,” the premiere, pulled in higher numbers than ever before…at least until “The Spoils of War,” which topped it, and then “Eastwatch,” which topped that. Now, “The Dragon and the Wolf” has topped them all — according to Entertainment Weekly, 12.1 million people tuned in to watch the episode live, a 13 percent increase over those who watched “Eastwatch,” the previous record-holder.

HBO did not give a comment, but if they did, it would probably be something like, “Yes yes yes yes yeeeeeeessssss!!!!”

All told, EW reports that after the non-live numbers are added in, Game of Thrones season 7 averaged just shy of 31 million viewers per episode, which is staggering. It’s all the more impressive considering that this has been a very leaky season for the show — two separate episodes leaked beforehand, and HBO is still dealing with an unrelated hack. “The Dragon and the Wolf” did not leak, which could help explain its huge success. But then again, it’s not like leaking ahead of time made the ratings for “The Spoils of War” and “Beyond the Wall” plummet.

The ratings for Game of Thrones have steadily improved every year. Next season: 100 million live viewers per episode. Aim for the stars.
