Doctor Who Superlatives: The Most WTF Moment – Blindness

Since this is our LAST superlative for season ten, let’s talk about what we’ve all wanted to. The most confusing episode in the series.
Now, many people believe that we got a couple of good episodes followed by a bunch of bad episodes this season. Overall, I agree with that. But one episode stood out amongst the rest to be the most confusing. The most Whaaaaaaaat? moment. The one that, when it was over, you had to watch it again to be sure everyone else was confused as you were.
The winner of that one is the end of Oxygen, when the Doctor goes blind.
Now, I hate to give out bad awards, as much fun as they are. Generally, I like to celebrate episodes. But this one was too confusing and gave off too many plot holes, especially the ending, for us to really understand it.
We don’t even need to go through the episode because what it really all comes down to is the end of Oxygen. When the Doctor gets blinded by the lack of oxygen by giving Bill his helmet. He was supposed to get help from Nardole and be fixed.

Why did he need help?
Still, almost two months after the series ended, I don’t understand this part of the series. Why was being blind such a big deal? The Doctor has used regeneration energy before to help people, and literally, in the next episode, he uses it to play a trick on Bill! (Which isn’t cool.)
And then, when he uses the machine to help him see, it was made too overreacting by having him be “possibly blind for the rest of his regenerations”. There’s no reason that he should be able to use the regeneration energy to help other people (Davros and River) but can’t fix his blindness.
I would be okay with it all if the blindness helped him. If it became a catalyst for something. But all it did was help the Monks take over the world. It didn’t help him do anything…and the Doctor could have been put in any situation and Bill would have probably turned the world over to the Monks!
Also, the fact that this is still plaguing me so many months later is sad and pathetic. However I am still plagued, and, like the Doctor’s Daughter, I’m pretty sure I still won’t rest until I figure out why he couldn’t fix himself.
Why do you think the Doctor can use regeneration energy to help others but not himself?
I hope you enjoyed our Superlative series! We’ll be doing more next month for the rest of the series!
