Writer Jane Goldman hints at humor and gore in her Game of Thrones prequel project

As the dust settles from season 7, Game of Thrones fans should take heart that HBO and friends are hard at work on a potential prequel series. HBO has commissioned five prequels be developed, with each of them having a different writer attached. Jane Goldman is one of those writers — she previously teased that her project will be “recognizable” to fans, and now she’s gone a step further.

Goldman is best known for writing spooky films like The Woman in Black (her current project, The Limehouse Golem, is about a series of murders in Victorian-era London) and for co-writing screenplays for action movies like Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and a couple of the better X-Men movies. She’s also known to have a unique sense of humor and a love of gore. Digital Spy asked her if those elements would turn up in her prequel:

"I don’t know if I’m allowed to say, but I would say yeah! Those are things I love, and things I like to do. It would be remiss of me not to put them in. So yeah."

The prospect of a gorier, more horror-themed show is interesting. There have been some scary moments on Game of Thrones, but only in passing.

Mining Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin’s work for potential ideas, if Goldman wants to include the horror elements in her show, the period known as “the Long Night” could provide inspiration. Old Nan spoke of this time period during season 1.

Ice spiders and mothers smothering their babies sounds pretty horrific to us.

But we likely won’t see anything for a while. Goldman admits that the project is still in its infancy. “I am just writing ideas and outlining some things,” she said. “I really can’t say very much about it, but yeah, it’s all going well. I’m having lots of fun making stuff up!”
