El Ranchito Imagine Digital releases SFX reel from “Beyond the Wall”

“Beyond the Wall,” the sixth episode of Game of Thrones season 7, was an action-packed hour that saw Jon Snow and his merry band of miscreants venture into the far north to capture a wight. They succeeded, but only after surviving a pitched battle with the army of the dead, losing Thoros of Myr to a zombie bear and Viserion the dragon to the Night King’s ice spear.

But that wasn’t the end of Viserion’s story. The Night King had his wight army drag him from the lake and then resurrected the dragon as a wight, adding him to the army of the dead.

The special effects pros at El Ranchito Imagen Digital were tasked with bringing all of this and more to life on screen. (They also contributed some raven shots from “Eastwatch.” The studio has released a video of its work on these episodes on its Vimeo channel. Check it out below:

This video is amazing, particularly when we see that the thousands-strong army of the dead started out as just a few guys wearing green suits. I’m also extremely impressed with the detail that went into dragging Viserion from the frozen lake.
