Emilia Clarke dyes her hair Daenerys Targaryen-blonde

Production on Game of Thrones season 8 starts in October, and it looks like some cast members are already getting into the spirit of things. Emilia Clarke, never one to shy away from posting behind-the-scenes snippets on Instagram, uploaded this photo:

After seven seasons of wearing a wig to play Daenerys Targaryen, Clarke (who’s a natural brunette, much to the shock of fans who see her on the street) has dyed her hair platinum blonde, presumably so she can better embody the Mother of Dragons for the show’s final season. Her hashtags support the idea that this is official: #khaleesikicksoff, #gameofthrones, #cominghomeneverfeltsogood. Also notice the picture of the Hound on the wall behind her.

Frankly, it’s kind of hard to picture normal hair doing everything Daenerys’ hair does. It’s possible that Clarke is just dyeing her hair in tribute to her character rather than to play her. But the Game of Thrones hair and makeup team has pulled off hairstyling miracles before. Either way, Clarke can expect to spend a lot of time in a chair while stylists poke and prod at her head.

Several of the show’s prominent cast members wear wigs. Lena Headey, also a brunette, has worn one since the first season. Sophie Turner is actually a blonde, and dyed her hair red to play Sansa up until season 7, when she wore a wig.

UPDATE: Another photo of Clarke having gone full platinum:

You’ve gotta love her subtitles. “My IQ has stayed around average and my need to be near fire-breathing creatures and uncomfortable seats made of iron has trebled.”
