Season 8: More looks at Winterfell—Also, a major set returns?

Between Emilia Clarke dyeing her hair platinum blonde and HBO overhauling the Winterfell set, preproduction on Game of Thrones season 8 is well underway. Let’s see what else is going down.

First up, @Direwolf_Dragon has some new shots of the Winterfell set at Moneyglass, Northern Ireland, which HBO is trying to ward fans with threatening signage. There may be a flaw in that plan:

Beyond the fences stands Winterfell, looking weirdly red.

The red is likely bare wood — for reasons that are tantalizingly ambiguous, the set is being heavily refurbished for season 8. The whole thing should be covered in faux-stone before filming begins in October.

Heading southeast to Belfast, Wiki of Thrones published a couple new photos of a set we saw for the first time in season 7: Wolf Hill Quarry, where the production built the frozen lake where Jon Snow and his Merry Men hung out on a frozen island surrounded by wights.

Here’s what the set looked like during filming for season 7…

…and here’s what it looks like now:

Wiki of Thrones got these photos — and its information — from Game of Thrones Tours, which is a company that gives, y’know, Game of Thrones tours. According to the company, Wolf Hill Quarry is being cleared and will be used again for season 8. If that’s the case, it needn’t necessarily be used to stand in for the same area beyond the Wall where Viserion died; considering what the production built in this space last year, they could use it for almost anything.

Or they could use if for nothing — we’re still in the early going here. For more, head to Wiki of Thrones.
