Director Miguel Sapochnik appears to be returning for Game of Thrones season 8

Emmy Award-winning director Miguel Sapochnik could be returning for the final season of Game of Thrones. The clue lies in an Instagram post from Game of Thrones cinematographer Fabian Wagner.

As Watchers on the Wall points out, this photo was taken during the filming of season 6’s Battle of the Bastards and includes Wagner and his assistant, a couple of VFX guys in Joe Bauer and Steve Kullback, and the man himself, Miguel Sapochnik. But, notice the caption:

"Back on Game of Thrones for prep of the final season and the team is back together. Good times even though winter is already here."

This seems like solid-ish proof that Sapochnik is returning for Game of Thrones season 8, and as you may well know, Sapo does it big.

Before “Battle of the Bastards” and the following episode “The Winds of Winter,” in season 6, Sapochnik directed season 5’s “The Gift,” and of course, the episode that rivals “Battle of the Bastards” in every way possible, “Hardhome.”

Sapochnik received recognition for “Battle of the Bastards,” winning an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, as well as the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series. He was also nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation.

If Sapochnik does return for Game of Thrones season 8, he could possibly be directing some massive battle…or the massive battle, in the final season of the show.

With the Night King and his army finally across the Wall, and with Cersei Lannister bringing the Golden Company from Essos to fight for her, there will be plenty of opportunities for Sapochnik to masterfully craft his special brand of directing magic.
