Family strife is at the core of Game of Thrones. And although Tyrion and Cersei have been at odds since the moment Tyrion was born, the simmering tension between Jaime and Cersei finally exploded at the end of season 7, when Jaime left her rather than serve under a queen unwilling to follow through on her promises. Talking to InStyle, star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau outline the meaning of Jaime’s final words to his sister-lover.
"She said, you know, no one walks away from me. And then he walks away from her and she tries to make that threat, like, ‘Okay, you’re going to die.’ When he says, ‘I don’t believe you,’ that’s the last thing he says, I think that means, I really don’t believe you. I don’t believe in you and me. But they’re always going to be connected."
While Jaime might not believe in their relationship any longer, there’s another factor in play: Cersei’s pregnancy. Some fans have wondered whether it’s real, or if Cersei is faking it to get something out of Jaime. For his part, Coster-Waldau bought it when he read the scripts, but now…
"I mean, I still think she is. But I don’t know how. I’m not sure anymore. It might be that she was just playing all of us. When we did it, I definitely believed her. And that, I guess, is what’s important. Jaime believed her."
Finally, Coster-Waldau discussed the popular fan theory that Jaime may be the one to finally kill Cersei in the end. The theory springs from the books, where it’s prophesied that Cersei will eventually be killed by the “valonqar,” or little brother (Jaime was technically born after her). Coster-Waldau said that ending things that way would make for a “beautiful connection…It makes sense. He killed the Mad King and now he’s killing the Mad Queen.” But Cersei’s potential pregnancy complicates things. “It’d be like the Red Wedding 2. That would be really horrible. I hope he wouldn’t.”
So the brother won’t kill his insane sister because she’s pregnant with their child. No word on what brother number two, who killed their father, thinks about the whole matter. See what we mean about family strife? And you thought Thanksgiving was weird at your house.
