The Simpsons and Family Guy send up Game of Thrones in their season premieres

The Simpsons kicked off its 29th — 29th, people — season last night with an episode-long tribute to the biggest show currently on TV: Game of Thrones…and to a bunch of other medieval-y entertainment. The Simpsons has parodied Game of Thrones before, as in this opening credits sequence from a few years back…

…but this is the first time it’s gone all-in. The episode, entitled “The Serfsons” opened with the family already ensconced in their life of feudal servitude. The plot revolves around Marge’s mother being bitten by an “Ice Walker” (geddit?) and slowly turning into one herself. The family sets out to try and save her life.

In between, the Game of Thrones references came fast and furious, including Ned Flanders’ head being mounted on the city walls (because someone named Ned’s head is always mounted on the city walls)…

…Bart prank-calling the local tavern via raven…

…and, most notably, Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) showing up as Marge’s overly amorous twin brother.

Coster-Waldau pounded the comparison home on Twitter:

There were some book-only references as well, as when we caught a glimpse of a store called Victarion’s Secret. And of course, there had to be a dragon somewhere in there:

Coincidentally, rival cartoon Family Guy also had its season premiere last night (it’s only in its 16th season — it’s a young-in), and also sent up Game of Thrones, but just for a second. Behold:
